RedHawks Bring Back 10-Game Winner Coffman

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have re-signed LHP Broc Coffman to a contract, the Northern League club announced. Coffman is the seventh player signed for the 2009 season and will be in Fargo when the RedHawks open training camp on May 1 at Newman Outdoor Field.

Coffman, 23, was 10-5 with a 3.03 ERA in 19 starts in 2008, which was tied for the Northern League lead in wins with teammate LHP Scott Koerber and Gary’s LHP Jeremy Plexico. In 115.2 innings pitched, Coffman allowed 43 runs (39 earned) on just 94 hits. He struck out 82 batters, walked 53 and held opponents to a .225 batting average against him. Coffman was selected to pitch in the 2008 Northern League All-Star Game and finished fifth in the Northern League in strikeouts and ERA.

Coffman was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the 2005 draft out of Lower Columbia (Wash.) J.C. He pitched three seasons in the Rangers organization before signing with the RedHawks last spring.

“Broc came in as a young guy and became a leader in our starting rotation,” said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. “He is a reliable, durable and quality starter we know we can hand the ball to every five days and he’ll give us an opportunity to win the ballgame.”
