Homers Power RedHawks to 6-3 Win Over Joliet

09/01/2010 9:33 PM - A three run seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (57-37) earned a 6-3 victory Wednesday night over the Joliet JackHammers (50-45) in front of 3,363 fans at Silver Cross Field.

Jay Cox gave the RedHawks the lead for good in the seventh with a solo home run against Todd Privett (9-5). Kole Zimmerman added another blast to bounce Privett and Wes Alsup came out of the bullpen. The reliever walked Zach Penprase, who then stole second and scored on a single by Mike Coles for a 6-3 lead.

The JackHammers had an opportunity to cut into the lead in the bottom half, loading the bases with one out. Joe Billick picked up a single against Matt Petrusek (4-2) and Cory Patton came on and walked Jonathan Wyatt on four pitches. Casey Hoorelbeke relieved Patton and walked Kevin Rios to load the bases with one away. Brad Correll popped out to short and Jon Nelson struck out looking on a controversial 3-2 pitch to end the threat.

Privett had his winning streak snapped at five, taking his first loss since July 18th. The lefty surrendered five runs on six hits over 6.2 innings with three strikeouts.

Joliet again got on the board early, scoring a run in the first against Matt Mossey. Wyatt led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a Rios single into left field for the 1-0 advantage.

Fargo would tie the game in the second on a Jesse Hoorelbeke long ball and took the lead in the third with two runs. Coles walked with two outs and stole second, scoring a Nic Jackson base hit. Jackson then stole second and scored on an Eric Campbell single to put Fargo up 3-1.

The JackHammers tacked away with one each in the third and fourth innings, tying the game in the fourth on a Richard Mercado home run into the Bud Beach in right field.

Mossey left the game after 5.1 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts. Four relievers went the rest of the way with Petrusek earning the win.

Wyatt, Mercado, and Billick all had two hits with Mercado and Rios picking up the two runs batted in.

The JackHammers and RedHawks will meet for the final time in the regular season tomorrow night at Silver Cross Field. T.J. Stanton (4-5) will go up against Rory Shortell (3-8) on the mound. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
