RedHawks Fall to Ruwe, Pheasants 5-0

06/16/2011 9:40 PM -
FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (19-14) were held scoreless by Kyle Ruwe and the Sioux Falls Pheasants (13-20) in a 5-0 game Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field
The 4,094 fans that came out Newman Outdoor Field were treated to an old fashioned pitcher’s duel for most of the night as neither team scored a run through the first seven innings.
Gus Milner led off the eighth inning for the Pheasants with a walk. Then, Mark Shorey pounded a groundball towards second baseman Carlo Cota for what looked like a double play ball, but the ball took a tough hop and Cota was forced to rush a throw to second base in order to even get one out. The throw was off target, pulling Zach Penprase away from the bag. Penprase argued and Manager Doug Simunic disputed the call as well, but the umpires maintained the safe call. The Pheasants built off that play and put four runs (one earned) up on the board before the inning was through, and added a fifth run in the ninth inning on a solo home run by Reggie Abercrombie.
The RedHawk’s offense was shut out despite getting seven hits. Penprase went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and Jim Fasano had a pair of hits. Mike Coles added a triple, but their hits were too spread out to produce any runs.
Kyle Ruwe (1-1) pitched seven innings of the shutout. Ruwe allowed six of the seven hits and had three strikeouts along the way to his first win of the season. Zach Ward (3-3) had a very good game as well striking out seven batters while allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, but ended up with the loss.
The RedHawks will play the second game of their four-game series against the Sioux Falls Pheasants Friday night. Game time is 7:02 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
