RedHawks Take Series From SaltDogs With 6-4 Victory

07/21/2011 3:21 PM -
FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (30-34) pulled out a 6-4 victory in the series finale to give them the series win over the Lincoln SaltDogs (30-34) on Thursday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.
The RedHawks looked sharp in front of the fourth Newman Outdoor Field sell out of the year and a crowd of 4,628 as they won back-to-back games to take the series from the Lincoln SaltDogs.
Alex Caldera started the game for the Fargo-Moorhead and got off to a great start by striking out the side in the first inning. Caldera was stellar throughout the game, striking out a career high 13 batters in seven innings of work. The SaltDogs managed just one run (earned) off him on four hits.
Kyle Nichols and Carlo Cota provided Caldera with some run support in the second inning. Nichols led off the inning with a solo shot off the top of the scoreboard in left field. Just two batters later, Cota blasted a ball out of the deepest part of the ballpark in left center for another solo home run to make it 2-0.
The RedHawks added two runs in each the seventh and eighth innings to spread a 2-1 lead into a 6-1 lead. Mike Coles plated Kole Zimmerman and Jake Krause in the seventh inning with a two-out double. Then, Jesse Hoorelbeke hit the RedHawks’ third solo home run of the game and CJ Retherford scored on Krause’s third single of the day in the eighth inning.
Those runs proved to be very important as the SaltDogs attempted a late comeback in the ninth inning. The American Association’s batting leader, Blake Gailen, got his first hit of the day in timely fashion hitting a double in the right center gap to score two runs before going on to score on an RBI single by Gavin Dickey. Joe Harris was able to contain the damage to three runs and seal the victory though by getting Phil Hawke to groundout.
Caldera picked up his sixth win of the year and lowered his ERA to 2.71. John James, the SaltDogs starting pitcher, gave up four runs (all earned) on six hits in 6.1 innings in his fifth loss of the year.
The RedHawks will start a nine-game road trip in Gary, IN Friday night against the RailCats. Fargo-Moorhead returns to Newman Outdoor Field on August 2nd to take on the Wichita Wingnuts. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
