RedHawks Drop Series Opener To Wichita

07/25/2011 10:00 PM -
The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 8-1 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in the inaugural meeting between the clubs on Monday night.

Junior Guerra turned in another terrific outing, allowing one unearned run on two hits in seven full innings to earn the win.  Guerra walked four and struck out four, and is now 5-0 in his last six starts.

Brent Clevlen gave Guerra early support, lining a two-run home run over the left-center field fence in the bottom of the first.

The Wingnuts manufactured two more runs in the bottom of the second.  Josh Workman led off with a walk and took second when Peter Barrows singled down the left field line.  Edwin Bellorin advanced the runners with a hit-and-run groundout to second, setting up Tyler Robbins' RBI groundout to shortstop to give the Wingnuts a 3-0 lead.  Mike Conroy capped off the rally with an opposite field double to left that made it 4-0.

Guerra did not allow a hit until two outs in the top of the sixth when Kyle Nichols singled to left-center.  Dating back to his performance on June 13th, Guerra worked 13.0 consecutive hitless innings at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.  Guerra faced multiple baserunners in just two innings of work.

Juan Richardson singled down the right field line in the bottom of the fifth to score Josh Horn from third base and increase Wichita's lead to five runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, Barrows led off with a single to center and advanced to third on Bellorin's hit-and-run single to center.  Robbins followed with another RBI groundout to drive in the Wingnuts' sixth run.  After Conroy reached on a fielder's choice, Horn broke the game open with a long, two-run home run to left-center.

Jared Simon worked a scoreless eighth, while Matt Nevarez struck out two during a perfect ninth to finish the game.  Horn has now hit safely in 10 games in a row.

The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. with Ryan Hinson taking on left-hander Jake Laber.
