Redhawks Re-Sign Alberts, Add Johnson

01/08/2014 2:56 PM -

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have re-signed OF Tim Alberts and signed OF Tre-Von Johnson to contracts for the 2014 season, the club announced.

Alberts, 27, batted .293 with 31 doubles, six triples, 16 home runs, 60 RBIs and 65 runs scored in 100 games for the RedHawks in 2013. He tied for the American Association lead in games played, was third in extra-base hits (53), fourth in total bases (207), sixth in doubles and tied for second with four intentional walks. He reached career highs in doubles, home runs and extra-base hits. Alberts is a career .309 hitter in six seasons of independent baseball. In 480 games, he has notched 111 doubles, 24 triples, 56 home runs, 308 RBIs and 286 runs scored. He was acquired by Fargo-Moorhead last winter from the Amarillo Sox, where he spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He originally signed with the Washington (PA) Wild Things of the Frontier League after completing his college career at Niagara University (NY).

Johnson, 22, completed his college career at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore in 2013. In 33 games as a senior, he batted .350 with five doubles, one triple, two home runs, 18 RBIs and 14 runs scored in a season limited by injury. In his four year career at UMES, he batted .332 with 33 doubles, 11 triples, six home runs, 89 RBIs, 114 runs scored and 46 stolen bases in 185 games. He is the school’s all-time hits leader, was a two-time All-MEAC Second Team selection and was named to the 2013 MEAC All-Tournament Team. “Tim’s a big power threat and continues to mature as a hitter. He is and will be a big part of our line-up,” said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. “Tre-Von is an exciting player who got overlooked last year due to injury. He is looking to kick-start his professional career and we are excited to give him an opportunity in spring training.”
