Back-to-back-to-back Hits in Eighth Too Much, RedHawks Fall 4-1 to Fish

07/04/2014 11:26 PM -

FARGO, ND – The Winnipeg Goldeyes got stellar pitching and timely hitting to defeat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 4-1 in front of 5,227 fans, the ninth largest crowd in franchise history, on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.

Josh Mazzola welcomed newly-signed RedHawks starting pitcher Curtis Camilli to the North Division with a one double to left field. Camilli, however, settled in and only let Mazzola reach third and ended the frame with a strike out.

It was the Winnipeg Goldeyes who got on the score board first. Camilli issued a lead-off walk to Donnie Webb. On an attempted pick off, Camilli overthrew Retherford, which allowed Webb to move over to second base. Luis Alen collected the RBI plating Webb with a single to make it 1-0 Goldeyes.

The RedHawks broke Matt Jackson’s no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Zach Penprase singled to center field, moved to second on a stolen base and continued all the way to third on a wild pitch. He was left on base with C.J. Retherford’s pop-out and Brandon Newton’s strike out.

Goldeyes doubled their score, when the American Association’s leading hitter Casey Haerther connected with a 1-0 pitch and made the score 2-0 with a solo home run.

The Independence Day game entered a 69 minute rain delay at 8:31pm and resumed at 9:40 pm. Kevin Fuqua took over the mound after Camilli, and Matt Jackson remained the pitcher for the Goldeyes.

Wake up call for the home ‘Hawks came in the bottom of the seventh. Retherford opened the frame with a hard-fought walk. Bourquin took Jackson’s fastball off the right field wall, putting both runners in a scoring position for Petey Paramore. Paramore welcomed relieving Kaohi Downing with an RBI single to right field scoring Retherford. The Hawks were close to tying the game at 2, but Bourquin was beaten to home plate by right fielder’s throw for a 9-2 put out. Another single by Tim Alberts sealed the appearance for Downing, who got replaced by Brendan Lafferty. He was able to stop the bleeding by striking out both Brandon Newton and Anthony Kaskadden.

The Canadians answered with the of their own in the top of the eighth inning. Reliever Erik Draxton walked first batter of that inning Webb, and Reggie Abercrombie made him pay with an RBI double, increasing the Fish lead to 3-1. Brock Bond plated Abercrombie with another single, and Winnipeg was on top 4-1.

Fargo-Moorhead was unable to fight back in the bottom of the eighth or ninth inning. New signee Curtis Camilli got the loss on the day, and Matt Jackson earned the win. Chris Kissock shut the door on the ‘Hawks for his eleventh on the season.
