RedHawks’ Bats Come Alive in 13-5 Win

07/27/2014 6:02 PM -

Retherford’s grand slam and Jackson’s 2-run homer were highlights of the damage the Fargo-Moorhead’s line-up was able to cause the St. Paul’s pitching on Sunday afternoon at the Newman Outdoor Field in front of 4,276 fans.

Both of the starters; Taylor Stanton for the RedHawks and Robert Coe for the Saints got off to a good start in the first inning, each setting down their opponents 1-2-3.

Things changed in the bottom of the first. Fargo-Moorhead got their first baserunner of the ballgame, when Erik Castro walked. Nic Jackson then hammered a ball over the right field wall for a 2-run home run, his seventh on the 2014 season.

From that point, things went downhill for the Saints. Coe began his struggle, as he walked Paramore, and gave up back-to-back singles to Sawyer Carroll and Anthony Kaskadden (1 RBI). Zach Penprase loaded the bases with his walk, and walk to Ronnie Bourquin meant an easy RBI. C.J. Retherford followed with an opposite field shot over the right field wall for a grand slam. The slam was his eighth home run of the season and second of the series.

Saints were able to get on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fifth. Centerfielder Jared McDonald belted a home run (his first of the season) on a first pitch he saw from Taylor Stanton. With one out, Joey Becker would single, and eventually score on Dwight Childs’ double, lowering the ‘Hawks’ lead to 8-2.

Anthony Kaskadden’s single, scoring Brandon Tripp made it a seven-run game again in the bottom of the fifth frame, which wrapped up the night for Saints’ starter Robert Coe. New pitcher Drew Gay received a warm welcome from Penprase in a form of an RBI double to make it a 10-2 lead for the home team.

The Saints were able to answer with one run in the top of the sixth, and two in the top of the seventh. In the sixth, Henry Wrigley scored on Joey Becker’s single, and in the seventh, Willie Cabrerareached on an error by Ronnie Bourquin, and Wrigley continued his successful afternoon at the plate with a 2-run home run. At this point, the scoreboard read 10-5 for the ‘Hawks.

The RedHawks added three insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th to extend the lead to 13-5.

That wrapped up the score for the Sunday night afternoon game, with the attendance of 4,267, Taylor Stanton got the win (3-8), while Robert Coe got the loss (4-6). There was no save earned on the day.

Next home game is scheduled for Sunday, August 3, at 6pm. Purchase your tickets by calling (701) 235-6161 or by logging on to www.fmredhawks.com
