Early Runs Boost RedHawks to Home Win

In a swift 2 hour and 22 minute long game, runs scored in the first and third innings ended up giving Fargo-Moorhead a 4-2 victory at home over the Canaries on Tuesday. The offense coming at the beginning of the game (instead of the end like the past few home games for the 'Hawks) allowed them to play relaxed and loose, and fend off any attempt of a comeback by the road team.

The home team built their lead early on to relieve pressure off themselves. It started in the first when Josh Mazzola crushed a double which brought in Keury De La Cruz. In the third the team then put up three runs. The first was when Chad Mozingo scored on a single by De La Cruz. Ryan Wagner then came home on an RBI by K.D. Kang. De La Cruz eventually came all the way around to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Another big piece of the game was the solid play of the defense, considering three different players were making their first starts at a new position this season. Mazzola went to shortstop after playing thirdbaseman all year, which made Wagner the thirdbaseman after playing only one inning their all season, and Bryan Johns moved from short to second. There were no errors committed, and two double plays were made.

Taylor Stanton was the starter for the home team, and he was extremely solid. He allowed nine hits, but allowed only two of them to score and walked none. Those runs came in the seventh and eighth innings. Taylor Zeutenhorst scored on a single by Ethan Chapman in the seventh. The eighth had Ozney Guillen being driven home on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Monger. Colton Reavis closed the game in the ninth for his third save of the season.

Stanton moves to (2-2) on the year to push the RedHawks to 16-14, while Stephen Bougher (1-3) takes the loss and the Canaries fall to 11-20. Game two of this Northern Division Series will be Wednesday, 7:02 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
