Winnipeg Wins Rain Shortened Game

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (57-42) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 8-6 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.

With Laredo’s loss versus Wichita, the Goldeyes can clinch the American Association wild card with a win on Sunday afternoon.  The St. Paul Saints clinched the American Association North Division on Saturday with a 1-0 win versus Lincoln.

Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Wes Darvill lined a one-out single to left.  Two batters later, Adam Heisler sliced a two-out, opposite-field homer inside the left field foul pole to cut the RedHawks’ lead to 6-2.  A Maikol Gonzalez walk and a Willie Cabrera single through the left side set up Reggie Abercrombie’s RBI single to left that pulled Winnipeg within three.

Casio Grider drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth, took second on a wild pitch, and scored the Goldeyes’ fourth run on a single up the middle from Darvill.  Darvill took second on an errant throw by centre fielder Kes Carter, and was doubled home by Carlton Tanabe who lined a ball off the bottom of the left field fence.  After Heisler was retired, Gonzalez tied the game with a groundball single that deflected off first baseman Dustin Geiger’s glove.

Victor Capellan (3-2) worked a scoreless top of the seventh to keep the game tied.  The inning was highlighted by a diving stop by Darvill behind the third base bag to rob Ryan Pineda of an extra base hit.

In the bottom of the seventh, Romanski came back from an 0-2 count to draw a nine-pitch walk.  David Rohm hit a line drive that broke off Pineda’s glove.  The error allowed Romanski to go to third base.  Grider was next and laid down a safety squeeze to the right of the mound.  Romanski slid home with the lead run as Geiger’s throw to the plate went of catcher Charlie Valerio’s mitt.  Darvill added a sacrifice fly to bring in Rohm and make it 8-6.

Eric Eadington took over in the top of the eighth and struck out the side.  Before the Goldeyes could bat in the bottom of the frame, inclement weather led to a rain delay and the eventual decision to call the game.  With the game being official (five complete innings), the Goldeyes came away with the eight-inning victory.

Capellan earned the win in relief, while RedHawks’ starter Tyler Alexander (12-5) took the loss.  Alexander allowed eight runs, seven earned, in a seven-inning complete game.  Alexander walked six and struck out nine.  Alexander now has 156 strikeouts on the season, one shy of the American Association’s single-season record.

The RedHawks took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.  With first and third and one out, Josh Mazzola lined a single to left that scored Pineda.  KD Kang followed with a three-run home run down the left field line.

A Geiger single and a Valerio double in the fourth gave the RedHawks second and third with no outs.  Both runners came home on a throwing error charged to Grider on a groundball hit by Mike Gilmartin.

Duke von Schamann started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision.  von Schamann allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits in four innings.  von Schamann walked none and struck out five.

Eadington was credited with his ninth save of the year.

Rohm’s 13-game hitting streak came to and end, which ties a career-high set earlier this season.  Gonzalez drew three walks and now has 75 on the year.  The Goldeyes’ single-season record is 80 set by Brian Myrow in 2011.
