Hawks’ Power Through with Carroll’s HR and 3 RBIs Over Saints 8-1

In a game started in a power outage, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks took advantage of 12 St. Paul Saints walks and some timely hitting to defeat their North Division rivals 8-1 on Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field.  It was the opening game of a four-game series between the two clubs.

The Saints were able to get on the scoreboard first. Henry Wrigley led off the inning with a base hit and after Willie Cabrera took a pitch in his arm, Joey Becker collected the RBI by singling into the right field.

The home team’s first runs came in the bottom third. Robert Coe walked both Zach Penprase and Ronnie Bourquin, and Sawyer Carroll then got an RBI single to right center. With two outs, it was Petey Paramore with his clutch 2-run single coming through.

With the Saints remaining quiet after their only run, it was the ‘Hawks that became loud. Ronnie Bourquin opened up the fifth with a walk, and Carroll added his second hit of the game, this time a towering home run over the right field walk, extending the lead to 5-1.

Unable to match those runs, RedHawks kept piling on. Two out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning saw Penprase, Bourquin (his fourth of the night) and Carroll walk. C.J. Retherford then added two more runs by plating Penprase and Bourquin with a single to right field.  Retherford would add his third RBI of the game, when he moved Penprase home with his sacrifice fly.

Taylor Stanton picked up his first win of the year and moves to 1-4.  He allowed one run on six hits in 7.0 innings pitched.  Robert Coe suffered the loss for St. Paul dropping down to 4-2.  Coe tied an American Association record with eight walks issued in the game.

At the plate, Sawyer Carroll had a great performance, ending a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Tomorrow night’s game will start at 7:02pm, when Jake Laber (5-1, 3.48 ERA) will match up against Nick Barnese (3-2, 3.49 ERA). Tickets can be purchased at www.fmredhawks.com or by calling (701) 235-6161.
