The Gary SouthShore RailCats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks starter Tyler Herron in the first two innings, but then Herron settled down, struck out nine and shut down the ‘Cats’ bats as the Redhawks spoiled “Back to the Future” Night at the U.S. Steel Yard.
Fargo (7-15) scored six unanswered to earn the 6-3 win after the early SouthShore lead in front of 3,883 NWI fans.
The RailCats (12-10), clad with bright orange ‘Marty McFly’-inspired specialty jerseys for Saturday’s game, got two runs in the first on a hit-by-pitch, error, single and groundout. Then they padded the lead with Zac Mitchell’s RBI single in the second.
After that, it was all Redhawks. Herron, who entered Saturday with a 6.75 ERA, went seven innings, gave up two earned runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out nine and lowering his ERA to 5.67.
Joe Dunigan went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs and Gartrell went 2-for-4 from the plate as well. Chad Mozingo had a monster game going 3-for-4 from the dish with one run scored and one RBI for the RedHawks.
