Things Get Wild North of the Border in 12-9 RedHawks WinWINNIPEG, MB – In a game that took an extra frame, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 12-9 before a crowd of 5,347 fans at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg in a marathon game that lasted over four hours on Friday night. The RedHawks wasted little time in getting RedHawks starter Ty Kelley run support. Zach Penprase led off the game with a single up the middle and would swipe second putting him in scoring position. Drew Muren proceeded to push a single to left field followed by a double from Chad Mozingo that plated two. Luke Bailey would double two batters later scoring Mozingo making it 3-0. Fargo-Moorhead continued to pound Goldeyes’ starter Tony Smith while placing another three spot on the scoreboard in the second inning. Michael Wing doubled to leadoff the frame followed by an RBI single from Ryan Pineda. Penprase would take first on four straight balls and Joe Bonfe singled to left two batters later scoring Pineda from second. With Penprase standing on third, Joe Dunigan sent a roller between short and third allowing Penprase to bolt home making it 6-0 after two innings. The Goldeyes’ bats came alive in the home half of the second. Winnipeg scored five runs on five hits in the frame. Former major leaguer Reggie Abercrombie highlighted the inning when he sent a sharp chopper up the middle that ricocheted off second base and rolled into right field. Abercrombie found himself standing on second with a two RBI double and the Goldeyes were now down just 6-5 after two innings. It was the Zach Penprase-Chad Mozingo connection that came alive in the middle innings for the RedHawks. In the fourth Penprase led off with a single pushed to right and would tag on a Mozingo sac fly making it 7-5. In the sixth frame it was Penprase again who singled to start and would be waved home on a Mozingo double making it 8-5 after six innings at Shaw Park. After the rough second inning, RedHawks starter Ty Kelley settled down. Manager Doug Simunic has been using the phrase “throw the kitchen sink at ‘em” as of late to Kelley, and he did just that for four straight innings. Kelley kept the Goldeyes off balance with a wide array of pitches and only gave up two hits up over that span. Kelley returned to the hill to start the seventh, but a Casio Grider single followed by an Abercrombie RBI single closed the book on his night. The right-hander exited after allowing six runs on ten hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Tyler Thompson came on in relief and Luis Alen would deliver an RBI single off the rookie plating Casey Haerther making it 8-7 RedHawks. Thompson was given the nod for the eighth inning and struck out Adam Heisler for the first out. Casio Grider singled and would steal second. Thompson would then intentionally walk Abercrombie, who had already gone 3-for-4, and gave way to Mike Nesseth. Haerther stepped to the plate to face the hard thowing right-hander and took two balls before Nesseth made a mistake pitch. He hung a ball out over the zone and Haerther smacked it to right for a two RBI double giving Winnipeg it’s first lead of the night, 9-8. Now facing a must score situation after leading the whole game, Luke Bailey led off the top of the ninth with a double putting the tying run in scoring position with no outs. Charlie Valerio would take a pitch off the elbow followed by a Ryan Pineda RBI single that plated Bailey tying the game 9-9. Nesseth remained on for the ninth attempting to send the game to extras. Alen led off by sending a ball hit to the gap between short and third. Zach Penprase tracked it down but sailed a throw to first baseman Joe Bonfe giving the Goldeyes a leadoff runner with no outs. Tillman Pugh would lay down a sacrifice bunt moving Alen to second but Nesseth retired the next two batters sending it to the tenth. Drew Muren and Chad Mozingo led off the bonus frame with back-to-back singles giving the ‘Hawks runners on first and second with nobody out. Facing former major leaguer Jalien Peguero, Joe Bonfe then took the first offering and crushed it to dead center for a two RBI triple. Bonfe would score on a throwing error on the play and the RedHawks grabbed a 12-9 lead. Mike Nesseth took the ball in the home half of the tenth looking for his first win of the season. Stuck in a jam with Grider and Haerther on the corners, he forced Josh Mazzola to ground into the 6-4 fielder’s choice ending the marathon game that lasted four hours and eight minutes. The RedHawks pounded out a season high 22 hits on 48 at-bats, also a season high, in the win. Zach Penprase and Drew Muren each had four hit games for Fargo-Moorhead whle Mozingo and Bonfe each had three RBIs. Luke Bailey and Muren also extended their hitting streaks to eight games. Fargo-Moorhead’s Ty Kelley and Winnipeg’s Tony Smith did not factor in the decision. Peguero (4-3) takes the loss for the Fish while Mike Nesseth (1-3) earns his first win of the season and first as a RedHawk. With the win, Fargo-Moorhead improves to 28-49 and has now won five of their last six games while Winnipeg drops to 35-42 on the season. The RedHawks will send Tyler Alexander (1-5, 3.44 ERA) to the hill while the Goldeyes will counter with Matt Jackson (6-7, 4.99 ERA) tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg.
