'Hawks Trounce the Fish 11-4![]()
WINNIPEG MB – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks pounded out 11 runs on 16 hits as they trounced the Winnipeg Goldeyes 11-4 before 5,387 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening. Kyle Anderson started on the hill for the Goldeyes and the ‘Hawks got to him early and often. In the first Chad Mozingo stepped to the plate and singled bringing up Luke Bailey who doubled to straightaway center making it 1-0. The RedHawks made the Fish pay with two outs again in the second. Ryan Pineda was issued a walk followed by a Michael Leach single bringing Zach Penprase to the dish. The shortstop delivered with a bases clearing double scoring two extending the lead to 3-0. Manager Doug Simunic praised starter Ty Kelley before the game calling him a “formidable” fifth starter and he showed why on Saturday evening at Shaw Park. Kelley retired the side consecutively three times in the first six innings and just faced 24 batters in that span. With command of his off-speed pitches, he cruised comfortably with the run support. Anderson began to settle down in the third and fourth innings. Including the last batter in the second and the first in the fifth, Anderson retired eight straight batters before Fargo-Moorhead figured out the left-handers dealings. Penprase got the fifth started with a double and would advance to third on an errant pickoff attempt with Muren at the plate, who singled scoring Penprase making it 4-0. Mozingo would proceed to walk bringing Bailey to the dish. Bailey took the first offering from Anderson and sent a line drive shot that just cleared the fence in left, a three run homer, giving the ‘Hawks a 7-0 lead. Fargo-Moorhead continued to pound out the hits, adding a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh pushing the lead to 11-0. Ty Kelley continued on into the seventh. He allowed his first batter to reach third in the frame as Tillman Pugh, who walked earlier in the inning, made it on a single from Brad Boyer. Kelley forced James Boddicker to fly out to center ending the threat. Kelley gave way to Jonathan Chudy for the eighth inning. The right-hander had a quality outing, going seven innings allowing just four hits on three walks with seven strikeouts. Facing Alex Kreis in the bottom of the ninth, Winnipeg put together a rally. They scored four runs on four hits but Kreis forced Josh Mazzola to ground into a 6-4 fielder’s choice ending the game. Drew Muren had a monster game going 4-for-6 with four RBIs and a run scored. Zach Penprase also had a big night at the dish, going 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored a pair driven in. Luke Bailey also had four RBIs in the game. Three others had multi-hit games for the RedHawks. Anderson (4-6) takes the loss for Winnipeg while Kelley (6-6) wins his sixth game. Kelley has been very good since moving to the rotation, as he started the season 0-5 in the bullpen. With the win, the RedHawks have ensured a split with Winnipeg and improve to 39-52 while the Fish slip to 42-49. Game three is scheduled for tomorrow night with Tyler Alexander on the mound. Brad Anderson will be on the call on 740 AM The Fan.
