Gilmartin Homers in Debut, 'Hawks Sweep X's
After a rough road trip in which they went 1-5, the 'Hawks took care of business at home to get back to .500. On Sunday afternoon they won 7-1 over Sioux City to complete the sweep.
The Explorers put the first run on the board when a Nate Samson double scored Michael Lang right off the bat. The home team responded by putting up two of their own in the bottom of the first. Josh Mazzola's double drove in Keury De La Cruz, and he later scored on an RBI single K.D. Kang to make it 2-1. They added another in the fourth with Josh Mazzola scoring his second run of the night.
All day the offense was efficient. They only left five on base en route to scoring seven runs on eight hits. In the sixth two more were added when Luke Bailey blasted a home run to score Mike Gilmartin as well. The eighth inning had the 'Hawks tack on two more with Gilmartin crushing a ball over right to bring in Dustin Geiger too. Gilmartin was officially signed the day of the game and his first ever hit for the team was a home run.
Along with the efficient offense, the pitching and defense were very solid. They only allowed three hits to the X's and no errors were committed. In the ninth a couple of wild pitches gave them a scare, but they held on to preserve a wide margin of victory.
Matt Snyder (1-2) earns his first victory of the year and Cody Forsythe (5-4) takes the loss. The RedHawks now sit at 31-31, and will host Winnipeg for a three game series starting Monday at 7:02 p.m. The Goldeyes are currently 2.5 games ahead of F-M in the American Association Wild Card standings.
