Late Offensive Spurt Wins Final Home Game of Regular Season
After going the first five innings without a single hit, it appeared as if the RedHawks' offense wasn't going to show up. However they scored runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take a 4-3 win over Kansas City on Thursday. This game was the last regular season game played at Newman Outdoor Field.
Josh Tols was a machine on the mound to start the game for the T-Bones. He was practically untouchable early as he struck out seven in the first five innings of the game and allowed no hits up to that point. The road team's offense was productive as well. Dalton Wheat's RBI double contributed to a two run first inning. Anthony Gallas ripped a ground-rule double in the third for KC and Wheat drove him in for a 3-0 lead early.
The first hit of the game came in the sixth for the home team when Ryan Pineda's double scored Kes Carter to cut the lead to 3-1. The team built off of that momentum in the seventh when Brian Humphries led off with a triple. However, it didn't matter what base he was on since the subsequent batter, Dustin Geiger, crushed a dinger to tie the game up. In the eighth the 'Hawks didn't take the lead in the most exciting fashion, a groundout by Humphries scored Pineda, but there are no style points in baseball, so a 4-3 lead was okay no matter how it happened.
Colton Reavis had his hands full in the ninth when he came in with three T-Bones on base and no outs. Showing the ice in his veins, he found a way to get the job done. Striking out the first batter he faced on three pitches and then coming back from a 3-0 count to strike the following batter out, he now put the game in a much more manageable situation. The next batter grounded out for Reavis to earn his 11th save of the season.
Taylor Stanton (5-5) wins what was likely his final start of the season, and Johnny Shuttlesworth (3-7) took the loss. The RedHawks' final four games will be in Winnipeg, where they'll have to sweep their Northern Division rival to keep their playoff hopes alive. Game one will be Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
