RedHawks Win 10th Straight; Take Lead in the North

WINNIPEG, MB – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 2-1 Friday night to move into a tie atop the North Division.

Tied at 1-1 in the top of the eighth inning, KD Kang doubled to right field with one out.  After Victor Capellan struck out Josh Mazzola, Kang took third on a wild pitch.  Charlie Valerio then doubled to right-centre to score Kang and give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Richie Tate relieved RedHawks’ starter Tyler Alexander and worked a scoreless inning.  Reggie Abercrombie singled with two outs and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position before Tate survived a line drive off the bat of Shawn Pleffner that was caught in right by Kang.

Capellan and Evan Rutckyj combined for a scoreless top of the ninth to keep the Goldeyes within one run.  Rutckyj faced a runner on third with one out, but struck out Brandon Tierney.  Two batters later, Rutckyj retired Trever Adams on a groundball to shortstop.

David Bergin drew a leadoff walk against Tate in the bottom of the ninth.  After Wes Darvill sacrificed Begin to second, Tate came back to strike out Mason Katz during a seven-pitch at bat.  Jordan Ebert lifted a flyball to deep right-centre that Kang ran down to end the game.

Tate completed a six-out save, his third of the season.

Alexander (3-5) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on five hits over seven innings.  Alexander walked five and struck out four.

Capellan (0-4) took the loss in relief for the Goldeyes.

Mikey O’Brien started for Winnipeg and took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on five in six innings.  O’Brien walked one and struck out six.

Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Andrew Sohn and David Rohm started the inning with consecutive singles.  Following a double steal, Josh Romanski bounced an infield single over the mound that scored Sohn.

In the top of the fifth, Mazzola led off with a double to left-centre and scored the tying run when Valerio lined a single to centre.  The RedHawks went on to load the bases with one out, but O’Brien struck out Tierney and then induced a flyout to centre from de la Cruz that kept the game tied.

Rohm and Romanski each had two hits.  The Goldeyes and RedHawks are now tied for first place in the American Association North Division.  Both clubs are half a game in front of the St. Paul Saints.  The RedHawks have won 10 games in a row.
