Former Major Leaguer DeCaster Joins RedHawks The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks added more international flavor, signing former Major League INF Yurendell DeCaster to a contract for the 2009 season, the Northern League club announced. DeCaster will be in Fargo when the RedHawks open training camp on May 1 at Newman Outdoor Field.
DeCaster, 29, is a Curaçao, Netherlands Antillies native and was a teammate of RedHawks 1B Randall Simon on The Netherlands baseball team that shocked the baseball community by knocking off a heavily-favored Dominican Republic team twice and advancing to the second round of the World Baseball Classic in March.
DeCaster spent the 2008 season in the Washington Nationals organization, splitting time between the Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League (AA) and the Columbus Clippers of the International League (AAA). He batted .321 with five doubles, four home runs, 16 RBIs and 11 runs scored in 15 games with Harrisburg before being promoted to Triple-A. With the Clippers, DeCaster batted .252 with 18 doubles, one triple, ten home runs, 47 RBIs and 43 runs scored in 89 games.
DeCaster began his professional career in 1997 after signing with the Tampa Bay Rays organization as a non-drafted free agent. He spent four seasons in the Tampa Bay system before the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the Rule 5 draft prior to 2001. DeCaster worked his way up the Pirates chain and made his Major League debut in 2006.
In his career, DeCaster has batted .261 with 232 doubles, 22 triples, 132 home runs, 579 RBIs and 554 runs scored in 1,135 games. He has played at the Double-A level or higher since 2004, and has been at the Triple-A or Major League level for all but 15 games since 2005.
