The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks made a pair of moves today, signing 3B C.J. Retherford to a contract and releasing 3B Brian Ruggiano. Retherford will be in uniform tonight as the RedHawks continue a four-game series against the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, MN.
Retherford, 25, has played 46 games this year at the Double-A level with the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers organizations. He has spent the previous four seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization and split time at both Birmingham of the Southern League (AA) and Charlotte of the International League (AAA) in 2010. Retherford batted .200 with 14 doubles, three home runs, 28 RBI and 34 runs scored in 79 games at Birmingham and hit .201 with seven doubles, four home runs, 13 RBI and ten runs scored in 44 games for Charlotte last season.
Retherford was signed by the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent in 2007 after completing his college career at Arizona State University. He was a Carolina League (A) All-Star in 2008 with Winston-Salem and a Southern League All-Star with Birmingham in 2009.
Ruggiano appeared in all 44 games for Fargo-Moorhead this season and batted .209 with nine doubles, one home run and 15 RBI.
