Nichols Plays Hero as RedHawks Win 2-1![]() FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (27-31) were lifted to a 2-1 win over the Kansas City T-Bones (25-33) by Kyle Nichols’ late inning heroics on Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND. Entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Zach Ward was on the hook for the loss despite throwing all nine innings and allowing only a single run. That was changed in quick fashion as Kyle Nichols blasted a solo shot over the left field fence to tie the game. The RedHawks proceeded to put two more runners on base but were unable to get the decisive run.
The T-Bones threatened in the tenth inning as Gerardo Caseres reached on a single and was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Keanon Simon. Joe Harris and Donnie Smith each picked up a strikeout as they worked together to stifle the T-Bones’ opportunity.
The RedHawks started the tenth inning in similar fashion. Zach Penprase led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Carlo Cota. Shipman walked Nic Jackson intentionally to bring in the chance for an inning ending double play. Then, Jesse Hoorelbeke worked a walk to load the bases. That brought up the previous inning’s hero, Nichols, with only one out. Nichols didn’t disappoint any of the 3,664 fans in attendance as he drove a 1-0 pitch into deep center for a game-winning sacrifice fly.
Shipman (1-4) gave up both RedHawks runs (all earned) in 1.2 innings pitched and received the loss. Donnie Smith (1-1) got the win, his first of the year.
The T-Bones scored their only run in the sixth inning. Keanon Simon led off with a double and was advanced on a groundout. Then, Ray Sadler notched his 65th run batted in with a broken bat dribbler down the third baseline. With the infield in, third baseman C.J. Retherford attempted to field the ball and throw home but was unable to make the barehanded play.
The RedHawks play the second game of their four-game series with the Kansas City T-Bones on Friday night. Game time is 7:02 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
