Pheasants Beat RedHawks 11-0, 4-0![]() FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (33-46) were shutout in back-to-back games, giving the Sioux Falls Pheasants (38-41) a series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND. Sunday’s play opened up at 12:05 with the Pheasants leading 4-0 in the carryover from Saturday night’s rain suspension. Sioux Falls was able to keep rolling as they got the RedHawks out in quick fashion, and Mark Shorey hit a solo home run in their first at bat. The Pheasants went on to win 11-0 in the first game and 4-0 in the second game, creating an 18-inning scoreless streak which includes the final two innings of Friday night’s ballgame.
The RedHawks had been hoping to use the overnight delay as a way to regain the momentum from the Pheasants. Shorey’s home run dimmed those thoughts, but nonetheless, they had an opportunity to get their offense going in the sixth inning of the first game. John Wagle hit a one-out single and was followed by a double by Zach Penprase, which extended his hit streak to 14 games, putting two runners in scoring position.
Unfortunately, Brandon Rapoza (4-10) was able to shut the door and picked up his fourth win of the year, tossing 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball in a combined shutout with Adam Cowart. Zach Ward (4-6), who started the game Saturday for the RedHawks, attempted to battle through injuries but was never himself as he lasted only two innings in his sixth loss of the year.
The second game featured both team’s aces, Jake Laber and Ben Moore. The Pheasants came out on top after scoring all four of the game’s runs in the third inning. Sioux Falls compiled five of their ten hits in that inning, and three of the five were for extra bases.
Laber (8-6) was not himself in his sixth loss of the year, giving up ten hits and four runs (all earned) in six innings. On the other side, Moore was on his game. Moore (12-2) pitched the full seven innings and held the RedHawks scoreless on three hits to win his twelfth game this season. He also struck six batters out, bringing his league leading total to 115.
The big story offensively was Gus Milner. Milner was 4-for-6 in the first game with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Then, he went 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the second game
The RedHawks hit the road on Monday and head to Lincoln for a four-game series with the SaltDogs. Fargo-Moorhead returns to Newman Outdoor Field on Friday, August 12 to take on the St. Paul Saints in a three-game series. Game time is 7:02 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
