The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed RHP Luis Angel Sanz to a contact, the club announced today.
Sanz, 26, joins the RedHawks after pitching for the Altoona (PA) Curve, the Eastern League (Double-A) affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, last season. He appeared in 47 games (three starts) for Altoona and was 3-5 with a 4.94 ERA and 16 saves. Sanz pitched 62.0 innings and allowed 38 runs (34 earned) on 61 hits. He struck out 61 batters and walked 35.
A native of Guatire, Venezuela, Sanz began his professional career in 2006 after signing with the Detroit Tigers organization and spent his first two professional seasons playing in the Venezuelan Summer League. He spent seven seasons in the Tigers organization and in 2012, Sanz was 11-3 with a 3.46 ERA in 23 games (16 starts) for the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the Florida State League (High-A).
In eight professional seasons, Sanz is 46-33 with a 3.92 ERA and 21 saves in 178 games (87 starts). He has allowed just 585 hits in 625.0 innings and recorded 487 strikeouts. Sanzs brother, Luis Alberto Sanz, is a catcher in the Tigers organization.
Luis has put up solid numbers at High-A and Double-A the last two seasons in both a starting and closing role, said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. We could use Luis in either role this season, and we are excited to get him to Fargo this summer.
