Unable To Come With a Big Hit Hawks Fall to Cats 7-1![]() With the RailCats keeping RedHawks to only four hits over the nine innings on Sunday afternoon, the 3,515 fans that paid to watch saw the ‘Hawks drop the sixth game of the eight-game home stand.
This afternoon, first scoring plays came in the top of the third for Gary SouthShore RailCats. Jose Garcia opened up the frame with a single that tipped Nick McCully’s glove and left Zach Penprase no play. With one out, Danny Pulfer grounded into what should’ve been out at first base, however, C.J. Retherford tried to get the lead runner at second base, which cause Penprase to commit a throwing error. Drew Martinez’s double then brought in both Garcia and Pulfer. With two outs, Ryan Babineau got the ball through the infield for a base hit, scoring Martinez for total of three runs in the third inning.
Quiet up until that point, the RedHawks got their only third hit of the ballgame from Nic Jackson. In the bottom of the sixth frame, with one man out, Penprase drew a 6-pitch walk. When two outs were recorded, Jackson stepped into the batter’s box and roped an RBI single to left field, putting the RedHawks on the board, 3-1 Gary.
After that, it was all ‘Cats again. In the top of the ninth, the Gary SouthShore RailCats got four insurance run for Morgan Coombs, opened up the bottom of the ninth and finished the complete game. First run crossing the plate that inning was Jose Garcia. He had walked, and Drew Muren followed up with a double. Drew Martinez collected the RBI on his single, plating Garcia. After that, all three runs came in at once, due to Zac Mitchell’s three-run home run over the right field wall to put the game out of reach 7-1.
The RedHawks not able to score more than one run (in the sixth) fell to the RailCats and drop to 36-44 record. In today’s afternoon game, the 3,515 fans in attendance saw Nick McCully suffer the loss and drop 0-1 on the year (his second start), while Morgan Coombs improved to 6-8 with the win.
The RedHawks return to Newman Outdoor Field on Friday August 22, when they open up a three-game series against Sioux City Explorers. Get your tickets at www.fmredhawks.com or call (701) 235-6161. |
