Two Out Hits Help Saints Route RedHawks 9-2ST. PAUL, MN (May 22, 2015) – The St. Paul Saints have figured out how to hit at CHS Field and on Friday night they did all of their damage with two outs. After scoring eight runs in the season opener they topped that with a nine run output getting production from the big boys in the lineup as they defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 9-2 on Friday night at CHS Field in front of 8,129.
Ian Gac, who collected four hits on Thursday night, had another strong game and took advantage of two walks in front of him in the third inning. After a leadoff walk to Anthony Phillips and a two out walk to Willie Argo, Gac roped a double that plated both to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Gac finished the night 2-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
With the Saints leading 2-1 in the third, and Steve Nikorak at second with two outs, Anthony Phillips came through with an RBI single to make it 3-1.
That was more than enough for Saints starter Dustin Crenshaw who was superb in his 6.0 innings of work. He retired the side in order in five of the six, the lone inning he failed to do so was the fourth. Crenshaw retired the first 10 hitters he faced. In the sixth he took a hard liner off the leg, but finished the inning before coming out. He tossed 6.0 innings allowing one runs on three hits while striking out three. He threw just 70 pitches, 52 for strikes.
Angelo Songco had a big night for the Saints and gave his club a cushion in the fifth. With runners at second and third and two outs Songco grounded one into center for a two-run single that gave the Saints a 5-1 lead.
The Saints put the finishing touches on their scoring output in a four run sixth. Nikorak and Phillips led off the inning with back-to-back singles. With two outs Willie Argo drove home the pair with a single to make it 7-1. After a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, Songo drove in two with a single to make it 9-1. Songco finished the night 3-4 with four RBI.
The same two teams meet in game three of the four game series on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Kramer Sneed (NR) against RedHawks LHP Austin Kirk (NR). |
