Gary Comes Back Again, Wins 4-3 in 11 InningsGARY, IN – Taylor Stanton threw 6.2 innings of no-hit baseball in Gary, Indiana, but the Gary Southshore RailCats stormed back in the late innings and defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 4-3 in 11 innings off a walk-off single from Ryan Brockett in front of 1,850 fans at the U.S. Steel Yard.
It was all RedHawks early on. Just like yesterday, Fargo-Moorhead struck first. Joe Bonfe belted an RBI double scoring Zach Penprase to take the early 1-0 lead. They would plate another run in the fifth. Joe Dunigan led off with a single. Joe Staley proceeded to take first via intentional walk. Frank Salerno would then reach on the 6-4 fielder’s choice, but managed to drive in Dunigan giving Fargo-Moorhead a 3-0 lead. Taylor Stanton started on the mound for the RedHawks. One would only need to look at his line to see how his night went. Stanton gave up three runs (all earned) on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work. Stanton had a no-hitter going through 6.2 innings, until J.D. Pulfer broke it up with a base hit with two outs. Drew Martinez would later drive Pulfer in making it 3-1 after seven innings. Gary would play small ball in the eighth. Jon Jones and Zac Mitchell had singles, Jones scoring on an Adam Taylor double laced into the left field corner from reliever Ty Kelley. Zac Mitchell would proceed to score on a wild pitch from Kelley and it was tied 3-3. Neither team would score in the ninth, so it was on to extra-innings. Zach Penprase fielded a low rolling groundball and fired it home to preserve the 3-3 tie in the ninth. The game appeared to be over in the bottom half of the tenth. Benji Waite faced runners on second and third with no outs. Zach Penprase repeated his play in the ninth, by first going home on a ground ball getting Adam Taylor out at home. Waite would then walk Drew Martinez to allow for the double play possibility. On the next batter, Zach Penprase proceeded to knock down a hard hit ball and flipped to second to begin the 6-4-3 double play and the RedHawks somehow got out of the jam. Fargo-Moorhead encountered the International Rule for the second time this season in the eleventh inning. Anthony Renz started out on second after striking out to end the top half of the tenth (tough debut for Renz, who went 0-for-5). Joe Staley would lead off the inning and would reach on a fielder’s choice, but it was sent right back to the RaiCats’ pitcher, Andy Loomis, who tossed over to third retiring Renz. What happened next was odd. Salerno would ground to short and Staley was putout on the flip, Gary would try and turn the double play but the ball was overthrown. Salerno turned and wheeled for second, but the overthrown ball would bounce off the fence right back to RailCats’ first baseman Alex Crosby, who turned and fired to Zac Mitchell who applied the tag on Salerno. Gary only faced two batters in the top half of the eleventh, made possible by the International Rule. Gary would put the pressure on right away in the bottom of the 11th. Jaime Del Valle would start on second according to the International Rule, and Roger Bernal lead off the inning with a single. Bernal would take second base on the defensive indifference, and Fargo-Moorhead would face runners on second and third with no outs. With a 2-1 count, Ryan Brockett pushed a weak line drive single past the out-stretched glove of Zach Penprase giving Gary the improbable 4-3 comeback win in walk-off fashion in 11 innings. Mike Nesseth (0-3) takes the loss for Fargo-Moorhead while Chuck Fontana (3-1) earns the win for the RailCats. Gary is now 20-17 and has made 14 comeback wins this season, while the RedHawks drop to 10-29, and are 3-10 in one-run games. Fargo-Moorhead has lost five in a row and is 0-4 in extra inning games this season. The series finale is set for tomorrow night with Joe Harris taking the mound for the RedHawks.
