Huge 7th Inning Propels F-M Past Jackals 7-3FARGO, ND – Powered behind a six-run seventh inning, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks took the series finale 7-3 against the New Jersey Jackals before 4,074 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Fan Appreciation Night.
The Jackals had scored at least one run in the first inning in the previous three contests and they did so again tonight. Facing Fargo-Moorhead's Tyler Alexander, Peter Mooney stroked a leadoff single and would be driven in two batters later on a Mark Threlkeld chopper sent up the middle giving New Jersey an early 1-0 lead.
A.J. Kirby-Jones came into tonight's game having homered in two of the three games in the series and took Alexander deep in the third for his team leading 19th home run of the year making it 2-0.
The RedHawks responded in the bottom half of the inning. Michael Leach would single and be driven in by Drew Muren getting F-M on the board and cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The middle innings became a pitcher's duel. Both Alexander and Jackals' starter John Walter pitched three consecutive scoreless innings. Both pitchers faced just one batter over the minimum in the fourth the sixth innings.
After Alexander surrendered a run in the top half of the seventh a wild half-inning ensued. Fargo-Moorhead would power past the Jackals aided by a pair of New Jersey errors and six base hits, including a two RBI triple from Muren, giving the 'Hawks a 7-3 lead.
Alexander gave way to Mike Nesseth for the ninth after going eight innings allowing three runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts. In a non-save situation, Nesseth would allow a pair of baserunners but ended the game with a tough diving snare for the final putout of the game.
Alexander (5-5) earns the win in his final start of the season while Alex Powers (0-5) takes the loss for his relief in the seventh inning.
Drew Muren continued his torrid ways at the plate. The centerfielder went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three batted in. Michael Leach had a big game at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and another batted in.
Though Fargo-Moorhead's streak of seven consecutive series wins is snapped, they do salvage the series split and season split as they went 4-4 in eight games versus the Jackals. The RedHawks improve their overall record to 42-55 while the Jackals falter to 53-41.
The homestand will continue with a three game set against the Amarillo Thunderheads to conclude the season. Saturday's series opener has a scheduled 6:00 first pitch time with pre-game beginning at 5:40 on 740 AM The Fan.
NOTES: Jordan Tescher recorded his first professional hit and first run scored in the seventh inning. Tescher is a rookie from Beach, ND and played collegiately at Dickinson State.
