Saltdogs Survive Late Rally by 'Hawks
Thanks to home runs in the first and fifth innings, Lincoln built enough of a lead to hold off a RedHawks team whom has been playing very good offense in the ninth inning lately. The final score of game two of this series at Newman Outdoor Field read 4-3 on Wednesday in favor of the road team.
The second batter of the game, Mike Gilmartin, took the second pitch he saw and turned it into a two-run blast over left field to help the Saltdogs jump out to a 2-0 lead. The home team answered back as soon as they could. Chad Mozingo led the bottom of the first off with a double, then scored on a triple by Ryan Pineda. Pineeeda came in on an RBI single by K.D. Kang to knot the game at 2-2.
The score would remain that way until the fourth inning, Jon Smith was driven on by Brandon Jacobs to give the lead back to Lincoln. In the fifth Curt Smith doubled the lead with a solo shot, putting the score at 4-2. The pitching and defense held up for the road team for innings two through eight, not allowing a run.
Crunch time came in the ninth, and the 'Hawks mustered up a valiant effort to extend or win the game. Kang kicked it off with a single. Brian Humphries was the next man up and he provided with a double, scoring Kang. A wild pitch advanced him to third, but unfortunately he would not reach home. Stephen Shackleford struck out two of the last three batters to earn the save and keep the win for his team.
Matt Larkins moves to 4-0 on the season while Taylor Stanton (1-2) takes the loss. Lincoln is on a three game win streak and sits at 16-10, while F-M has dropped four in a row and falls to 13-12. The series finale will beThursday at 7:02 p.m.
