After a rocky roadtrip in which they went 1-5 and lost the previous three, the RedHawks bounced back at their home field to beat the Explorers by a score of 5-1 on Friday night.
Brian Ernst's return to F-M went all according to plan. He was on the team in 2013 and 2014 and pitched for the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League in 2015 and at the start of this season. Ernst went eight innings in his second debut for the 'Hawks, allowing only six hits and striking out seven. The sole run he allowed came in the third when Ino Patron scored on a Derrick Robinson single to put the X's on the board.
Offensively the home team did damage as soon as they could. Keury De La Cruz' double drove in Ryan Pineda, and he later scored thanks to an RBI by Dustin Geiger. Cruz finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, the exact same numbers he produced in Thursday's game.
In the fifth they stretched with three more runs. Josh Mazzola hit a moonshot over left field to score Cruz as well. Bryan Johns then knocked another one in with an RBI double. On the other side Ernst continued to control the game and the defense was solid with no errors.
Ernst goes to 1-0 in his first start and Graham Johnson (5-3) takes the loss. Game two of the three game series will be Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field, slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
