Alexander Blanks T-Bones
Tyler Alexander continued to prove why he's one of the most feared pitchers in the American Association, shutting down the Kansas City offense in the RedHawks' 4-0 at Newman Outdoor Field on Monday night.
The southpaw out of Florida International University already led the league in strikeouts by a wide margin coming into the night, and added eight more in this game to bring his total to a whopping 147, which is 31 more than second place. Alexander didn't just strike batters out, he didn't allow them on base either. He yielded a total of five hits and zero walks in all nine innings of the game. The complete game shutout dropped his ERA to 3.05 in his 135.2 innings this year, which are good for sixth and third in the league, respectively.
Offensively the 'Hawks were lethargic for stretches, but got the job done. Kes Carter led the bottom of the first off with a double and then scored on a Keury De La Cruz sacrifice fly. F-M then didn't get another hit until the sixth, but they still found a way to put runners on. Mike Gilmartin was hit by a pitch in the third and then scored on a fielder's choice. In the fifth a walk and an error allowed runners to reach second and third with one out, but two infield grounders stranded them.
When the offense got back on track in the sixth they were effective. The home team went from one hit coming in to the inning and left with five. However K.D. Kang was the only run scored when Brian Humphries hit an RBI single to boost the lead to 3-0. Carter then led off the seventh with another double and came in on another sacrifice fly, this time by Josh Mazzola.
Tyler Alexander moves to 12-4 which ties him for the league lead in wins. Mike Kickham (3-4) was the losing pitcher. Game two of this four game series will be Tuesday, 7:02 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
