RedHawks Drop Extra Inning Game
Coming into the night four games behind a playoff spot with six games to go turns every game into a must-win. Unfortunately for the RedHawks they couldn't get it done against Kansas City on Wednesday night, losing 2-1 in 11 innings at Newman Outdoor Field.
The offenses for both teams were extremely slow. The regulation run for the road team came in the second inning when Dalton Wheat hit a double, then scored on Ryan Retz' single. The T-Bones had three hits in that inning and just three hits in the eight other regulation innings. The home team's was in the seventh in somewhat similar fashion. Dustin Geiger led off with a double, but he scored on a wild pitch to tie it at 1-1. The 'Hawks had a chance to take the lead but left runners stranded on second and third.
Part of the reason why there was little to no explosive hitting was the play on the mound. Jose Almarante was the F-M starter and he continued to prove why he's second in the American Association in ERA. He allowed just one run in his eight innings pitched, and yielded five hits and one walk to six strikeouts. As a whole KC was very solid too. They struck out 13 in 11 innings and allowed eight hits.
Since neither team could manage more than one run it went past nine innings. In the bottom of the tenth Josh Mazzola walked and made it all the way to third, but the home team couldn't bring him in for the decisive run. KC responded in the top of the 11th in big fashion with Brett Wiley leading off with a double. He came in on a single by Wheat. In the bottom half Charlie Valerio led off with a single and advanced to third in the inning, but he couldn't come across and Johnny Shuttlesworth earned his second save of the year.
Mark Haynes (5-2) was the winning pitcher and Will Mathis (2-4) took the loss. The series finale and the last home game of the regular season for F-M will be Thursday, 12:30 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
