Saints Snipe Hawks With Walk-OffThe St .Paul Saints snap a four game losing streak in a 6-5 win at CHS Field on Friday night in front of 9,054. The win improved the Saints to 31-22 and they maintain their 1.0 game lead in the North.
For the fifth straight game the Saints were tied heading to the seventh and for the third straight game they were tied going to the ninth. The previous four didn’t work out in their favor, but Carter made sure Friday night did. With one out in the ninth and a 1-0 count on Carter, he drove a fastball from Trey McNutt over the right field wall, his third of the season with the Saints and eighth overall, for the game winner. Prior to the home run RedHawks pitchers had retired 15 in a row, including six strikeouts. The hit prior to Carter’s home run was a solo homer as well, by Jon Kristoffersen, his first professional home run, which tied the game at five in the fourth.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second as Tony Thomas reached on a fielding error by the second baseman Mikey Reynolds. Carter’s double sent Thomas to third and Thomas would score on a wild pitch.
The lead didn’t last long as the RedHawks put up a three spot in the third courtesy of a long ball of their own. Robert Coe, making his first start of the season for the Saints, gave up a leadoff single to Charlie Valerio. With one out Yhoxian Medina walked and Chris Grayson drilled a changeup over the right field wall, his third of the season, to make it 3-1.
The Saints responded with three of their own in the bottom of the inning as Tim Colwell led off with a single to center. With one out Brady Shoemaker walked. Anthony Gallas drilled a double off the left field wall scoring Colwell to make it 3-2. Nate Hanson’s RBI groundout tied the game at three. Thomas then hit a ground ball into the hole between short and third. The shortstop Medina tried to backhand the ball, but it went off his glove into shallow left and Gallas scored on the RBI single to give the Saints a 4-3 lead.
In the fourth, however, the RedHawks added their second home run of the night. Coe started the inning off by hitting Josh Mazzola. K.D. Kang made him pay with a two-run blast to right, his fifth of the season, giving the RedHawks a 5-4 lead. Coe lasted 4.1 innings allowing five runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two.
The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series on Saturday night at CHS Field at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Jason Creasy (4-5, 5.10) to the mound while the RedHawks are TBA. |
