RedHawks Top GoldeyesWINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (61-37) lost 8-1 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Shaw Park on Saturday evening. David Bergin doubled to right-centre field leading off the bottom of the second and scored the game’s first run on a Wes Darvill single to centre. The RedHawks tied the game in the top of the third. KD Kang led off with a ground rule double to right-centre, took third on Brandon Tierney’s sacrifice bunt, and scored when Devan Ahart lifted a sacrifice fly to left. In the top of the sixth, Tierney lined a single to right leading off and went to third on a hit-and-run single through the left side from Ahart. Yhoxian Medina hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Tierney with the go-ahead run. Two batters later, Josh Mazzola hit a two-out, two-run home run to left. Trever Adams hit an opposite field solo home run to right with one out in the top of the seventh to extend the RedHawks’ lead to 5-1. Ahart led off the eighth with an infield single and advanced to second when Medina reached on a bunt single. After Chris Grayson lined out to left, Mazzola struck a two-run double to centre that scored Ahart and Medina. Charlie Valerio reached on an infield single that moved Mazzola to third, and the RedHawks scored their final run on a sacrifice fly to centre from Keury de la Cruz. Tyler Alexander (8-6) earned the win for the RedHawks, allowing one earned run on eight hits in eight and one-third innings. Alexander walked two and struck out eight. Mikey O’Brien (10-5) took the loss for the Goldeyes, allowing five earned runs on six hits over seven innings. O’Brien walked none, struck out four, and threw just 85 pitches. O’Brien was pitching on three days of rest. Kenny Mathews pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Winnipeg in the top of the ninth. Shawn Pleffner had two hits and has hit safely in eight games in a row. Mason Katz had a nine-game hitting streak come to an end. After O’Brien held the RedHawks scoreless in the first and second, the Goldeyes tied a franchise record with 30 consecutive scoreless innings going back to the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday at St. Paul. The Goldeyes also pitched 30 straight scoreless innings from August 20th-23rd in 2013. The loss snapped the Goldeyes’ season-high seven-game winning streak. The series continues Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Zack Dodson (5-6, 5.10) faces right-hander Tyler Herron (8-3, 3.09). |
