RedHawks Sign Four; Cota, Penprase, Piepkorn Back![]() Cota, 28, was the Northern League All-Star second baseman in 2008, his first season with the RedHawks. Cota batted .325 with 29 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 59 RBIs and 80 runs scored in 96 games. He finished first in the Northern League in runs, games, and walks (65), was second in doubles, third in hits (123) and eighth in batting average.
Cota, who spent six seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays organization prior to signing with Fargo-Moorhead last year, also led all Northern League second basemen in games, putouts (172), assists (290), total chances (474) and double plays (88), while finishing second with a .975 fielding percentage.
Penprase, 24, batted .326 with 10 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 29 RBIs and 42 runs scored in 65 games for the RedHawks in 2008 before the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract at the end of July. Penprase ended the season with the Greenville (SC) Drive of the South Atlantic League (A), where he batted .235 with four doubles, one triple, eight RBIs and nine runs scored in 26 games.
Penprase joined with Cota to form one of the best double-play combinations in league history last summer. In 65 games, Penprase recorded 254 assists, 106 putouts, 61 doubles plays and a .960 fielding percentage. Penprase attended spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers this year, but was released over the weekend.
Piepkorn, 28, joined the RedHawks in 2008 when Penprase left the club for the Red Sox. Piepkorn appeared in 32 games at shortstop and batted .295 with 13 doubles, six home runs 23 RBIs and 19 runs scored. He also posted a .955 fielding percentage, turned 30 double plays and recorded 110 assists.
Piepkorn, a former North Dakota State University star, spent 2004-2007 in the Cincinnati Reds organization after signing as a free agent following his Bison career. The Sauk Rapids, MN native reached the Double-A level with the Reds, and was second in the Midwest League in home runs in 2005.
Borrell, 22, comes to the RedHawks after finishing his college career at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers, FL, last spring. As a senior, he batted .353 with 25 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 54 RBIs and 39 runs scored in 53 games for the Eagles. As a junior at FGCU in 2007, Borrell batted .359 with 13 doubles, eight triples, five home runs, 63 RBIs and 48 runs scored in 55 games played.
Borrell came to the RedHawks attention while playing in the Colombian Winter League for the Barranquilla Camines where he was a teammate of OF Steve Mortimer, who played for the RedHawks in 2008. Borrell batted .298 with six doubles, 15 RBIs and 16 runs scored in 104 at bats.
