Bakker Re-Signs; 'Hawks Add Three More![]() Bakker, 26, returns to Fargo-Moorhead after emerging as one of the top starting pitchers in the Northern League in 2008. He was 7-3 with a 3.46 ERA in 16 games (15 starts). Bakker pitched 93.2 innings and allowed 42 runs (36 earned) on just 76 hits. He struck out 69 batter, walked 46 and held opponents to a .226 batting average against him. He finished 7th in the Northern League with a 3.46 ERA and was selected to pitch in the Northern League All-Star Game.
Bakker began his professional career in 2004 after being selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 11th round of the draft out of the University of North Carolina. In his career, Bakker is 20-22 with a 4.57 ERA in 144 games (47 starts).
Chambliss, 24, comes to the RedHawks after three seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization. He spent 2008 with the Wilmington (Del.) Blue Rocks of the Carolina League, where he was 2-4 with a 4.55 ERA and 24 saves. Chambliss pitched 59.1 innings and allowed 32 runs (30 earned) on 60 hits. He struck out 45 batters, walked 32 and held opponents to a .264 batting average against him. Chambliss’ 24 saves and 43 games finished led the Carolina League last season.
Chambliss was selected by the Royals in the 11th round of the 2006 draft out of Florida State University. In his career, Chambliss is 14-10 with a 3.86 ERA and 29 saves in 97 games (16 starts).
Giles, 24, pitched in the Texas Rangers organization for the Bakersfield Blaze of the California League (A) in 2008, his second full season with the club. Giles was 1-2 with a 3.98 ERA and one save in 35 games. He pitched 63.1 innings and allowed 43 runs (28 earned) on 67 hits. Giles struck out 71 batters, walked 30 and held opponents to a .270 average against him.
Giles signed with the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent out of New Mexico Junior College in 2005. In his career, he is 10-12 with a 4.66 ERA in 136 games, all of which are relief appearances. Giles has struck out 238 batters in 210.1 career innings. He was a teammate of RedHawks LHP Broc Coffman in the Rangers organization with Clinton of the Midwest League in 2006.
Smith, 20, comes to the RedHawks from Gloucester County (N.J.) College. In 2008, he was 3-4 with a 3.82 ERA in nine games for the Roadrunners. Smith pitched 35.1 innings and allowed 16 runs (15 earned) on 30 hits. He struck out 19 batters and walked ten.
