Jackson Leads RedHawks to 4-2 Victory Over Flyers![]() On a night in which area veterans were recognized during Military Appreciation Night, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 4-2 at Newman Outdoor Field in front of 3,250 patriotic fans.
Fargo-Moorhead (10-5) jumped out to earn early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Left Fielder Jay Cox led off with a double and later scored on Nic Jackson’s single to right.
Schaumburg (5-12) answered in the top half of the fourth inning. Left fielder Mike Mooney worked the count full and drew a walk off RedHawks starter Chad Rhoades. He would then score on a double down the right field line by Flyers designated hitter Joey Gomes.
The RedHawks plated two more in the fifth. Cox again got himself on base with a walk and shortstop Zach Penprase followed with a line drive single up the middle. Reigning Northern League MVP Jackson then doubled on a ground ball that barely squeezed inside the first base bag, scoring both runners.
Schaumberg catcher Richard Mercardo drove in Gomes in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to one run, but the RedHawks answered in the eighth with a Cox RBI single to help seal the 4-2 win.
Fargo-Moorhead’s Jackson was 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. He extended his Northern League-best hitting streak to 13 games. Gomes and Brandon Newton each went 2-for-4 for the Flyers.
Rhoades picked up his second win of the season for the RedHawks, giving up two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work. Despite allowing only three runs in five innings, Schaumburg’s Cody Evans took the loss. Donnie Smith struck out all three hitters he faced in the ninth inning to earn the save for Fargo-Moorhead.
These teams will meet again tomorrow night in game two of the series. Tomorrow is Guaranteed Win Night at Newman Outdoor Field. If the RedHawks don’t win, each fan in attendance will receive a voucher for a ticket to another 2010 regular season home game. Brett Harker will get the starting nod for Schaumburg while Jake Laber takes the hill for Fargo-Moorhead.
