RedHawks Bring Back Piepkorn and Sign Stone![]() The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed INF/OF Jeremiah Piepkorn and RHP Brandon Stone to contracts, the Northern League club announced today. In order to make room for Piepkorn and Stone on the roster, the RedHawks have released LHP Jeremy Hauer and placed RHP Alex Kent on the Inactive List. In addition, LHP Cory Patton has been reclassified as a rookie pitcher and will no longer be used as a position player.
Piepkorn and Stone will be in uniform and in the lineup when the RedHawks open a four-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones tonight at 7:02 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
Piepkorn, 29, returns for his third stint with Fargo-Moorhead. In his only full season with the team, Piepkorn helped lead last season’s team to the Northern League Championship and won the batting title with a .339 average. In 92 games, he clubbed 20 doubles, two triples, 19 home runs and drove in 73 runs. He also scored 74 runs and finished in the top-5 in nine offensive categories. In addition to leading the league in batting average, Piepkorn’s 123 hits also led the circuit.
A former North Dakota State University star, Piepkorn signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization as a non-drafted free agent in 2004 following his college career. After four seasons with the Reds, Piepkorn signed with the RedHawks for the final month of the 2008 season. That year, he batted .295 with 13 doubles, six home runs, 23 RBIs and 19 runs scored in 32 games.
In his six-year career, Piepkorn has batted .270 with 105 doubles, 13 triples, 70 home runs, 310 RBIs and 273 runs scored in 475 games.
“We are adding an impact player to an already strong line-up,” said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. “We know what he is capable of doing offensively and we think this move helps us set up for the stretch run. We want to win another championship and adding Piepkorn hopefully will aid in achieving that goal.”
Stone, 22, completed his college career this spring at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. He was 0-2 with a 2.11 ERA in 14 games and set a team record with eight saves. He was a member of the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship team as a junior with the Tommies, and helped St. Thomas to three consecutive MIAC Championships.
In order to make room on the roster for Piepkorn and Stone, the RedHawks have released LHP Jeremy Hauer and placed RHP Alex Kent on the Inactive List. In addition, LHP Cory Patton has been reclassified as a rookie pitcher. This season, Hauer was 0-2 with a 6.61 ERA in 20 games. Kent was 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 10 games but has been dealing with arm soreness. null null |
