Simunic Gets 1,000th Career Win![]() FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (23-19) edged the Sioux City Explorers (20-22) 4-3 to give Manager Doug Simunic his 1,000th career victory on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND. The 2,932 fans in attendance were treated to a special occurrence on this Sunday matinee. Doug Simunic was crowned the first Independent League manager to reach the 1,000 career win milestone. After the game, Bruce Thom, the RedHawks President, presented Simunic and his family with a certificate for an all-expense paid vacation for this coming winter in honor of Simunic’s achievement and devotion to the RedHawks organization. Today’s game was destined to be another low scoring contest at Newman Outdoor Field as neither team scored through the first five innings. Oliver Odle, the RedHawks starter, had a perfect game going into the sixth inning.
The Explorers shattered Odle’s hopes of a perfect game by putting together a couple hits and scoring a run in the sixth inning. They added to that total with a leadoff home run by TJ Bohn in the seventh inning.
The RedHawks offense which had already left eight runners on base got rolling in the seventh. Mike Coles started the rally by extending his hit streak to fourteen games. Zach Penprase followed with a walk. Then, Nic Jackson plated Coles with a double and Jesse Hoorelbeke lined a single to center to score Penprase and Jackson and give the RedHawks a 3-2 lead.
Trouble arose in the eighth inning as the Explorers loaded the bases with one out. Casey Hoorelbeke entered the game and despite walking in one run was able to keep the damage to a minimum and get out of the inning with the game tied at three.
That meant the RedHawks were in need of some late inning heroics in order to get Simunic his 1,000th win at home. Kole Zimmerman stepped up to the plate and blasted what proved to be the game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Kevin Fuqua closed out the game for his second save of the year. Casey Hoorelbeke (2-2) was credited with the win. Oliver Odle, who after starting the game perfectly, ended up with a no decision after giving up three runs (all earned) in his last three innings. Eddie Delacruz (2-2) gave up the final two RedHawk runs and received the loss.
The RedHawks start an eight-game road trip on Tuesday in St. Paul. Their next home game will be July 7th against Winnipeg. Game time is 7:02 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
