RedHawks Lose in 12 Innings To Gary![]() The Gary SouthShore RailCats walked off with a 5-4 win on a bases-loaded single off the wall by infielder Brian Kolb in the bottom of the 12th to match the ‘Cats franchise record for consecutive wins and complete the three-game sweep of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in front of 4,120 at U. S. Steel Yard Sunday.
After the RedHawks (30-37) elected to walk both Brad Boyer and Cristian Guerrero, the heart of the RailCats (41-26) order, to setup the double play possibility, Kolb stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. The San Diego native smacked the 1-0 pitch off the base of the leftfield wall to drive in Klein and start the belated celebration of three consecutive series sweeps for the RailCats. Mike Massaro led the way for the ‘Cats offense with a four-hit performance raising his season average to .315.
Fargo took control of the game early scoring three times in the first two innings off RailCats starter Alain Quijano. Nic Jackson doubled home Zach Penprase for the game’s first run and it was Penprase who drove home both C.J. Reatherford and Kole Zimmerman on a double of his own in the second inning to give the RedHawks a 3-0 advantage.
Quijano settled in nicely from that point on throwing up zeroes over the next 5.1 innings. For the game the southpaw surrendered three runs on seven hits while striking out four over his 7.1 innings of work Sunday. RedHawks starter Zach Ward cruised through the first four innings until the RailCats put a rally together in the fifth.
The first four batters in the fifth reached base for the RailCats and all four came around to score to give the ‘Cats a 4-3 lead. Chris Carrara led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by catcher Craig Maddox. A walk to Klein loaded the bases for Massaro who’s single to drive in Carrara and Maddox cut the Fargo lead to just one run. Boyer’s sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third with just one away for Guerrero. The Dominican slugger extended his season-best hitting streak to 12 games with a two-RBI single which gave the ‘Cats their first lead of the night.
The RailCats held a 4-3 lead heading to the ninth inning. The first two batters reached in the inning for Fargo against RailCats closer Travis Minix. After the South Central grad pitched a perfect ninth Saturday, Minix unfortunately blew just his second save since coming to the ‘Cats in a mid-season trade, allowing a sacrifice fly by Adam Tollefson tie the game.
The ‘Cats rallied to snatched their 10th extra-innings win with Kolb’s 12th inning heroics and moved to 21-9 at U. S. Steel Yard, also good for tops in the American Association for home record.
