Boyer Homerun Gives Saints Walk-off Win

ST. PAUL, MN - With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, Brad Boyer, who leads the league with a .421 average, deposited a solo shot over the right field wall carrying the Saints to an 8-7 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 3,575.

In the bottom of the ninth Joey Becker, who finished the night 4-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, was retired for the first time on the night when he grounded out to short to start the inning.  Up stepped Boyer.  He hit the first pitch he saw from Nathan Kilcrease for a solo homer, his third of the season, for the game winner.  Boyer finished the night 2-5 with a double, homer, three RBI and a run scored.

With the RedHawks leading 2-0 in the fourth the Saints snapped a 16 inning scoreless streak in a big way.  With one out Willie Cabrera walked and Brandon Tripp singled him to third.  Ole Sheldon collected his first RBI since returning with an RBI single to make it 2-1.  Jose Hernandez walked to load the bases.  An RBI ground out by Dwight Childs tied the game at two.  Dan Kaczrowski walked to load the bases and Becker knocked home two with a single to left making it 4-2.  Boyer followed with a two-run double to give the Saints a 6-2 lead.  The Saints chased RedHawks starter Alex Caldera, who entered play with the eighth best ERA in the league.  He went 5.0 innings allowing a season high six runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out two.

In the top of the fifth the RedHawks answered with two outs as Saints starter Luke Anderson ran into trouble.  He walked Nic Jackson and gave up a single to Tim Alberts.  Keith Brachold then drilled one over the right field wall, his third of the season, to make it 6-5.  Anderson went 5.0 innings allowing five runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out six.

The Saints bullpen couldn’t hold the lead in the sixth as Dustin Klabunde gave up a one out single to Zach Penprase and walked Mitch Einertson.  Klabunde left the game for left-hander Connor Whalen, who gave up an RBI double to left-hand hitting Jackson tying the game at six.  Whalen walked Alberts intentionally to load the bases and then forced in the go ahead run by walking Brachold.  Mikey Mehlich finished the inning by striking out the next two hitters.

The Saints tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Childs led off with a double and scored on a one out Becker double.

Mehlich went 1.2 hitless, scoreless innings striking out three while Matt Meyer earned the win by throwing 2.0 shutout innings allowing two hits, while walking two and striking out one.
