The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (58-35) begin their final home series of the regular season at 7:02 p.m. Tuesday against the Amarillo Sox (50-43) at Newman Outdoor Field. Despite dropping four out of the last five games, the RedHawks’ magic number to clinch the division crown is one. The Sox recently swept the Lincoln Saltdogs in a three-game series and are in a tie for the South Division lead with the Laredo Lemurs. The ‘Hawks play the Sox in four games this week and finish the season with three games in Winnipeg against the Goldeyes. Lefty Jake Laber (8-5, 3.79) is expected to start for Fargo-Moorhead tonight, while Amarillo is expected to counter with Joe Newby (6-4, 3.37).
Fargo-Moorhead and Amarillo faced off for the first time in 2012 in Texas. The RedHawks picked up a win in the first game of a three-game set, but Amarillo won the final two games in the early season series. Nic Jackson led the team against the Sox last season going 8-for-13 (.615) with a home run and seven RBIs during the series. The franchise was orginally known as the Pennsacola Pelicans before being sold and moved to Amarillo before the 2011 season. Amarillo has had independent baseball since 1994, with the Amarillo Dillas playing at Potter County Memorial Stadium from 1994-2010 in the Texas-Louisiana, Central and United Baseball independent professional leagues.
The RedHawks radio home is The Fan 740 AM. Scott Miller serves as the voice of the RedHawks for his eighth season. Pregame starts 20 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. A free online stream of every Fargo-Moorhead home game is available at livestream.com/fmredhawks.
Magic Number Sits at One
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks’ magic number remains at one after two straight losses to the Kansas City T-Bones. Up six games in the North Division, Fargo-Moorhead holds a tie-breaker over Winnipeg who is currently 1 1/2 games out of the wild card race. With a victory or a Goldeyes loss, the RedHawks will wrap up the North Division and secure a 2013 American Association playoff berth.
Nic Jackson Homers His Way to The Top
Nic Jackson’s first-inning home run against the Kansas City T-Bones Sunday was his 11th of the season and 65th as a RedHawk. With 65 home runs, Jackson is now tied with Jesse Hoorelbeke for most home runs all-time in a RedHawks career. Jackson – who has played with Fargo-Moorhead from 2009-2012 – also holds the club’s record for career RBIs (391).
Penprase and Laber among Career Leaders
Zach Penprase and Jake Laber are both near career accomplishments as a RedHawk. Penprase – who already holds club records in games played, walks and stolen bases – trails Joe Mathis by one run for most all-time in RedHawks history. He currently sits at 452 runs scored. Pitcher Jake Laber is 10 strikeouts away from tying Jeff Bittiger for third all-time in career strikeouts with 324 as a RedHawk. Laber is currently third in innings pitched (502 2/3), fourth in games started (79), and fourth in wins (36).
Kilcrease and Harris Dominant
Nate Kilcrease and Joe Harris have carried the bullpen’s effort throughout the 2013 season, with both sporting under-two ERA’s. Kilcrease hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 16 appearances, while Harris has been equally impressive not allowing an earned run in his last 14 appearances.
