RedHawks Re-Sign Gutierrez, Add Higgs![]() The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have re-signed RHP Danny Gutierrez and signed C Travis Higgs to contracts for the 2014 season.
Gutierrez, 27, signed with the RedHawks as a free agent last June and was 0-3 with a 4.26 ERA and three saves in 17 games (five starts). He pitched 44.1 innings and allowed 22 runs (21 earned) on 43 hits, struck out 39 batters and walked 21.
Gutierrez was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 33rd round of the 2005 draft out of Riverside (CA) Community College and signed with the Royals in 2006. He played in four seasons in the Kansas City organization before moving over to the Texas Rangers chain in a trade in 2009. He reached the Double-A level with both the Royals and Rangers, and pitched four games for the St. Paul Saints in 2012.
Higgs, 25, joins the RedHawks after spending the 2012 season with the Traverse City Beach Bums of the Frontier League, where he was teammates with current RedHawks 1B Chase Burch and C Marcus Nidiffer. He appeared in 15 games for the Beach Bums and batted .239 with one home run, four RBIs and six runs scored.
Higgs signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Seattle Mariners in 2011 after completing his college career at the University of San Francisco (CA). He batted .300 in the Arizona League for the Mariners affiliate. Higgs clubbed ten doubles, one home run, drove in ten runs and scored 13.
REDHAWKS NOTES…
• The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have released RHP Derrick Miramontes. Miramontes was acquired from the Grand Prairie AirHogs in August, and was 2-1 with a 2.77 ERA in 13 games for the RedHawks last year.
• Former RedHawks RHP Tyler Herron, who spent the 2012 season with Fargo-Moorhead, is playing for the Harrisburg (PA) Senators of the Eastern League (AA) in the Washington Nationals organization. He is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances. Herron as allowed three hits and struck out one in 3.2 innings pitched. The Nationals purchased Herron’s contract following the 2012 season.
