Penprases Big Hit Leads RedHawks Over Canaries 4-2Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks SS Zach Penprase’s two-run ground rule double in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a tie game and led the RedHawks to a 4-2 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries on Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
In the first two innings, it was all about the pitchers. RedHawks newly signed RHP Brad Orosey and Sioux Falls’ LHP Matt Wickswat recorded 1-2-3 innings. It wasn’t until the top of the third, when Stephen Branca got the first base hit of the ballgame.
For the RedHawks, the first hit came in the bottom of the third, when Dusty Robinson roped a double down the left field line. Anthony Kaskadden followed up with reaching safely on an error, and Zach Penprase brought Robinson in with his single to left. Kaskadden would later come around to score as well on Sawyer Carroll’s RBI single, making it 2-0 for the RedHawks.
The RedHawks’ lead did not last long, as the Canaries tied the ballgame with two runs in top of the fifth frame. Chris Duffy doubled to deep center field, and Carlos Mendez scored him with his double off the right field wall. The second run was Mendez scoring on Matt Hitt’s base hit to center field. At that point, the ballgame was tied at 2-2.
The score remained unchanged even through the top of the 7th inning, when 3,802 fans saw the RedHawks’ reliever Kevin Fuqua work into a jam, loading the bases with two singles and a walk on two outs. Fuqua, however, got Steven Tinoco out on a popout to right field.
The ‘Hawks showed their claws in the bottom of the seventh, when reliever Josh Giles issued three walks and recorded only one out, loading the bases for Zach Penprase. Penprase then belted a ground rule double, bringing in Paramore and Tripp for a 4-2 RedHawk lead. C.J. Retherford had a chance to cause more damage to the Birds, however, he grounded out into a 1-4-6-3 double play.
Fuqua earned the win for the RedHawks in relief (4-1), while Josh Giles (0-3) took the loss. Nate Garcia worked a scoreless top of the ninth frame and shut the door for his 14th save of the season.
