The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks saw double the action Thursday evening as the team defeated the Quebec Capitales 2-1 in Game 1, but followed with a not-so-stellar 7-1 loss that resulted in a doubleheader split.
In Thursday’s first game, C.J. Rutherford tallied a run for the RedHawks in the top of the second inning, leaving the Capitales in a 1-0 deficit until Asif Shah scored thanks to a Rene Leveret RBI. Nic Jackson responded in the top of the sixth when he crossed the plate thanks to a walk by Sheldon McDonald, who relieved Shawn Sanford on the Capitales pitching mound. In six innings for the RedHawks, Taylor Stanton allowed one run on three hits. Despite a single-run margin, the Capitales failed to make a comeback and granted the RedHawks a 2-1 victory.
Quebec’s Karl Gelinas’ performance on the mound in Game 2 made it difficult for the RedHawks to find a rhythm as the pitcher stuck out 11 batters and allowed just one run. Shawn ONeill was dealt the loss as he pitched 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. While Anthony KasKadden’s home run sent the RedHawks up 1-0 in the top of the third, the Capitales rebounded with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. John Malo closed the deal as he cruised over the plate for a 7-1 win for Quebec.
